You will be making both HSTs and QSTs in this part. If you've been with me before you already know this, but for those joining me for the first time...I can't make a consistantly sized HST for anything. I have tried every way you can imagine...and this way is the only one that works for me. If you didn't cut your fabric and prefer another method...go for it!!

Using 34 3" squares of Neutral and Medium...create 68 HSTs : mark the diagonal on wrong side of Neutral squares, match right sides together with Medium squares, stitch 1/4" on either side of diagonal mark, cut apart on diagonal and press toward Medium fabric. (Diagram 1.1) 2
Using the same method as in step#1...using 17 3-1/2" squares of Light and Dark, pressing toward Dark fabric...create 34 HSTs .

Mark a diagonal across the seam on the wrong side of HSTs from step#3.

Match units from step#2 and step#4...right sides together with Neutral matching to Dark and Light matching to Dark, stitch 1/4" on either side of the diagonal mark, cut apart and press either way. (Diagram 1.2)

Important : square up all HSTs and QSTs to 2-1/2".
