Susannah Variation
Sussanah Variation Quilt Block

I don't know why I looked at this one twice. Maybe because it's not a difficult block to make, but it creates some interesting patterns if it is rotated or mirrored. You will need 3 fabrics: a neutral, and a medium and light of the same color. We will be making this one 8" finished.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Cut as follows:
Fabric Cutting Information
Neutral Cut 1 4-1/2" square
Light Cut 8 2-1/2" squares
Medium Cut 8 2-1/2" squares

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Mark the diagonal on the wrong side of 4 2-1/2" squares of Medium.
  2. Matching right sides together, attach a square to opposite corners of the Neutral Square...press open toward corners. Repeat on other 2 corners. With wrong side facing up, do a quick size check to be sure it measures 4-1/2" square...square up as needed. Trim away excess fabric on corners.
  3. Using 4 2-1/2" squares of both Light and Medium, join together...press toward medium.
  4. Attach 2 units from step#3 to opposite sides of unit from step#2 as shown...press toward outer units.
  5. Attach a 2-1/2" square of light to last units from step#3...press toward center.
  6. Attach rows from step#5 to opposite sides of unit from step#4...watching fabric orientation...press toward outer rows.
  7. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 8-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.
