Sailboat Block
Sailboat Block

This is something we haven't done before...a picture block. I was asked to do a "summer" block and this is it! I really had fun designing this block, but pay careful attention as it is a bit different. We will be making this one 12" finished.

You will need 4 fabrics to make this block: a light blue (Lt) for the sky...this could be anything that has clouds in it; a medium blue (Med) for the water...I have an interesting "wave" fabric that will work nicely for this part; a brown/tan (Br) for the hull of the boat and a bright (***) for the sails...think jewel tones...red, purple, pink, lime green, yellow...

NOTE: I will be giving the half-square triangles a bit larger cut as I have heard from some folks that they are having the same trouble I have getting them the exact right size...then have you square them up. If you can do this unit cutting as recommended...and I envy you if you can...subtract 1/8" from cutting size.

Sample Quilt Layouts

You need to cut as follows:

  1. Light Blue(Lt): cut 1 2-1/2"x12-1/2"; cut 2 3-1/2"x6-1/2"; cut 1 2-1/2" square; cut 4 3" squares
  2. Medium Blue(Med): cut 1 2-1/2"x12-1/2"; cut 2 2-1/2"x1-1/2"; cut 1 3" square
  3. Brown/Tan(Br): cut 1 2-1/2"x6-1/2"; cut 1 3" square
  4. Bright(***): cut 4 3" squares

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of all Lt and Med 3" squares.
  2. Match right sides of Light Blue squares to right sides of Bright squares; stitch 1/4" on either side of diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press seams toward Bright fabric.
  3. Match right sides of Medium Blue square to right side of Brown square; stitch 1/4" seam on either side of diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press seams toward Brown/Tan fabric.
  4. Square up half-square triangles to 2-1/2".
  5. Attach 2-1/2"x1-1/2" rectangles of Medium Blue to Medium Blue/Brown half-square triangles...using diagram below to ensure correct placement; press seam toward rectangles.
  6. Attach units from step#5 to either side of 2-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangle of Brown; press seams toward rectangle.
  7. Create 1 double unit and 2 triple units of Light Blue/Bright half-triangle squares using diagram below to ensure correct placement; press seam of double unit toward hst on the right; press seams of 1 triple unit toward center hst; press seams of the other triple unit toward outer hsts.
  8. Attach 2-1/2" square of Light Blue to Light blue side of double half-square triangle unit using diagram below to ensure correct placement; press seam toward 2-1/2" square.
  9. Join triple half-square triangle units and unit from step#8 together as shown in diagram below to create sails...set triple unit with seams press toward center as the middle row; press seams toward the top/bottom rows.
  10. Attach a 3-1/"x6-1/2" unit of Light Blue to either side unit from step#9; press seams toward rectangles.
  11. Attach unit from step#6 to unit from step#10 to create sailboat; press seam toward hull unit.
  12. Attach 2-1/2"x12-1/2" rectangle of Light Blue to either side of sailboat unit to complete the block; press seam toward rectangles of Light Blue.
  13. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
