Next Door Neighbor Block
Next Door Neighbor Block

Here's another easy one. If it takes you more than 30 mintes to put this one together, I'll be greatly surprised. You need 3 fabrics for this block: 2 different mediums of the same color and your background. We will be making this one 12" finished. (NOTE: the area without a fabric notation s/b M#1)

General Reminders...(1) If there are any in the block, I have you cut slightly large for the Half-Squares Triangles (HST), so you MUST square them up as I direct, and (2) there is no sashing in the quilt to "fudge" block sizes, so you need to be exact with your finished block sizes in order to join them easily. In case you are wondering what colors I'm using in the blocks...the fabrics that I used are the same colors as my graphics. I hope this will be the start of a fun project for us all!

Fabric Cutting Information
Medium#1 Cut 2 3-1/2" squares
Cut 2 3-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangles
Medium#2 Cut 2 3-1/2" squares
Cut 2 3-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangles
Background Cut 8 3-1/2" squares
Cut 4 3-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangles

Step Sewing Directions
1 Mark a diagonal on the wrong side of all the 3-1/2" squares.
2 Using the 3-1/2" squares of Background and all 4 3-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangles of Medium...place one square of Bkg on one corner...right sides together; stitch just to the corner side of the diagonal line; press open to corner. Repeat on other corner. Turning the unit face down, trim back to original rectangle size. You may now trim the excess fabric from the corners, if you choose. (Diagram 1)
3 Using the same technique as in step#2...attach a 3-1/2" square of Medium to the right hand corner of the 3-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangles of Bkg. (Diagram 2)
4 Attach a unit from step#2 to a matching unit from step#3...press toward Bkg. Square up to 6-1/2". (Diagram 3)
5 Creating 2 rows...attach a Medium#1 unit to a Medium#2 unit as shown...press as the blocks will let you making sure both go in the same direction. (Diagram 4)
6 Join rows from step#5...press either way. (Diagram 5)
7 IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create the finished quilt.
