Mosaic Variation

I like this block...it uses simple HSTs which can be manipulated any way we want. I like this variation, so this is the one I chose. You will need 3 fabrics: a neutral background and 3 Medium/Darks. We will be making this one 12" finished.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Cut as follows:
Fabric Cutting Information
Neutral Background Cut 8 4" squares
Medium/Dark#1 Cut 4 4" squares
Medium/Dark#2 Cut 4 4" squares

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Mark the diagonal on the wrong side of the 4" squares of Background fabric.
  2. Match a square from step#1 to each Medium/Dark#1 squares with right sides together; stitch 1/4" on either side of the diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press toward Medium/Dark#1.
  3. Match a square from step#1 to each Medium/Dark#2 squares with right sides together; stitch 1/4" on either side of the diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press toward Medium/Dark#2.
  4. Square up all units to 3-1/2".
  5. Making 2 units: join HSTs as shown, pressing as arrows direct.
  6. Making 2 units: join HSTs as shown, pressing as arrows direct.
  7. Attach a unit from step#5 to a unit from step#6...make 2 new units, pressing seams either way.
  8. Join units from step#7 to create block.
  9. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.
