Merry Kite Block
Merry Kite Block

I don't know why this one appealed to me, but it did. I hope you agree. You need 3 fabrics for this block: 2 mediums and a dark. I would recommend the colors be contrasting, but just not clashing...lol! We will be making this one 12" finished.

    4-patch
  3. Mark diagonal on the rest of the 2-1/2" squares of M2; match with one end of 4 rectangles of M1 and stitch on diagonal line; press open to corner. Repeat on other end...make sure stitching is in same direction. Repeat with other 4 rectangles of M1...be sure stitching is in the opposite direction as shown below.

TIP : the units are more stable if the excess fabric is left on, but you could trim the bottom 2 layers to a 1/4" seam if you desire...I find that if I trim after I press open and square up...I get less stretching due to the seams on the diagonal.

  4. Join the 2 different units from step#3 to create arrow unit...press either direction...square up to 4-1/2".
    arrow unit
  5. Attach a 4-patch to either side of an arrow unit as shown to create 2 rows...press toward 4-patch.
    outer row
  6. Attach arrow units to either side of 4-1/2" square of M1...press toward center.
    center row
  7. Attach rows from step#5 to either side of row from step#6 to create block...press seams toward outer rows.
  8. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
