Kansas Star
Kansas Star

I just realized that I am doing state star blocks...oh well...it's a pretty block, so we'll do it this month. We will be making this one 12" finished.

You will need 3 fabrics: a medium and dark blue, and a white, WOW or mainly white print.

Sample Quilt Layouts

You need to cut as follows:

  1. White: cut 4 4-1/2" squares; cut 20 2-1/2" squares
  2. Medium Blue: cut 5 4-1/2" squares
  3. Dark Blue: cut 16 2-1/2" squares

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Match a 2-1/2" square of white right sides together to a corner of a 4-1/2" square of medium blue. Stitch on the diagonal. Trim seam to 1/4". Press seam toward corner. Repeat for all corners on each medium blue square as shown below.

  2. Repeat step#1 for the 4-1/2" white squares and the 2-1/2" Dark Blue squares.
  3. Square up the 9 units to 4-1/2".
  4. Attach unit from step#1 to either side of unit from step#2 as shown - create 2 rows. Press seams toward corner units.

  5. Attach remaining units from step#2 to either side of remaining unit from step#1 as shown. Press seams toward center unit..

  6. Attach row from step#4 to either side of row from step#5 as shown in finished unit below. Press seams toward center row.
  7. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
