HourGlass Block
HourGlass Block

I guess I should just confess that I used that book of blocks for the entire BOM quilt, and it still has a ton that I haven't used...yet. This one uses 3 of the "Basic Building Blocks", so it will be fairly simple to create. You need only 2 fabrics for this block: a dark/medium and your background. We will be making this one 12" finished.

General Reminders...(1) I have you cut slightly large for the Half-Squares Triangles (HST), so you MUST square them up as I direct, and (2) there is no sashing in the quilt to "fudge" block sizes, so you need to be exact with your finished block sizes in order to join them easily. In case you are wondering what colors I'm using in the blocks...the fabrics that I used are the same colors as my graphics. I hope this will be the start of a fun project for us all!

Fabric Cutting Information
Dark/Medium Cut 2 4" squares

Cut 4 3-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangles

Step Sewing Directions
1 Using 4" squares...mark the diagonal on the wrong side of Bkg squares; match right sides together and stitch 1/4" seam on both sides of the diagonal mark; cut apart on the diagonal mark; carefully press open toward Dark/Medium. Square up to 3-1/2". (Diagram 1)
2 Mark a diagonal on the wrong side of all the 3-1/2" squares of Bkg and Dark/Medium.
3 Using the 6-1/2" square of Background and 4 3-1/2" squares of Dark/Medium...place one square of Dark/Medium on one corner of Bkg square and one on the opposite corner...right sides together; stitch just to the corner side of the diagonal lines; press open to corner. Repeat on other corners. Turning the unit face down, trim back to original 6-1/2" square. You may now trim the excess fabric from the corners, if you choose. (Diagram 2)
4 Using the same technique as in step#3, doing one corner at a time...attach the 3-1/2" squares of Bkg to the 3-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangles of Dark/Medium. Once the corners are stitched, pressed and trimmed...with the unit face down, trim back to original rectangle. (Diagram 3)
5 Attach a Flying Geese unit from step#4 to opposite sides of the Snowball unit from step#3...press toward Flying Geese. (Diagram 4)
6 Creating 2 rows...attach an HST to opposite sides of a Flying Geese unit as shown...press toward center. (Diagram 5)
7 Attach rows from step#6 to opposite sides of unit from step#5...press either way.
9 IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create the finished quilt.
