Goose Around Block
Goose Around Block

This is the first of the combined blocks we will be doing to round out the year. I'm going to try to create some new blocks for you to try...but, if I find one I really like that has already been done, we may do that anyway. This one is something I dreamed up this morning...I haven't ever seen it, but if you know it by a different name, please let me know. You will need 4 fabrics: a white or WOW for background, 2 Mediums and a fussy cut large print. Pull your mediums from colors in your fussy cut square. We will be making this one 12" finished.

NOTE: spaces in the drawing without a notation will be done with the white, or WOW, background fabric.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Cut as follows:
Fabric Cutting Information
White(WOW) Background Cut 32 2" squares
Cut 2 2"x9" strips
Medium 1 Cut 2 2"x9" strips
Medium 2 Cut 16 2"x3-1/2" rectangles
Fussy Cut Large Print Cut 1 6-1/2" square

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Mark the diagonal on the wrong side of the 2" squares of Background fabric.
  2. Match a 2" square to one end of each of the Medium 2 rectangles as shown...stitch one thread to the corner side of the diagonal line...press open toward corner.
  3. Repeat step#2 with other corner...stitching in direction shown.
  4. Turn the rectangle unit over so that the WRONG side is up...square up to 2"x3-1/2" using the original rectangle as your base and trimming the added corners as needed.
  5. Attach 2 units from step#4 together as shown...press seam toward flat end of goose.
  6. Attach 2 units from step#5 together as shown...press seam toward flat end of goose.
  7. Attach Background strips to Medium 1 strips with a scant 1/4" seam...press toward Medium 1 fabric.
  8. Check width of new units...they should be 3-1/2" wide. Check width at varying points and redo seam if not correct width.
  9. Place units from step#8 face to face...butting seams really carefully...and having opposite colors together. Trim one end square, by setting a marking line on your ruler on the seam line and cutting end. Then cut 4 2" units.
  10. Stitch each unit together...to get center seams really tight...set unit with the "edge" of the upper seam allowance pointing toward the presser foot as this will slightly "push" the butted seams together when stitching. Press open with seam to either side.
  11. Attach a unit from step#10 to either side of 2 units from step#6...press toward 4-patch units.
  12. Attach last 2 geese units to opposite sides of the fussy cut 6-1/2" square...press toward fussy cut square.
  13. Attach units from step#11 to opposite sides of unit from step#12 as shown...press either way.
  14. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.
