Flying-X Block
Flying-X Block

This is a relatively simple block to create for the first block of a new year. I cut and sewed this block in under an hour...that's very simple! You only need 2 fabrics for this block: a WOW, or white, and a medium. We will be making this one 12" finished.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Cut as follows:
BOM Fabric Sampler Fabric Cutting Information
WOW Background Cut 4 3-1/2" squares
Cut 4 4" squares
Medium Med#3 Cut 4 3-1/2" squares
Cut 4 4" squares

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Mark diagonal on the wrong side of the 4" WOW squares; match right sides together with Medium 4" squares; stitch 1/4" on either side of the diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press toward Medium fabric. Square up to 3-1/2".
  2. Attach 3-1/2" square of WOW to 3-1/2" square of Medium; press seam toward Medium fabric.
  3. Attach 2 HSTs together as shown below; press in direction of arrow.
  4. Attach units from step#2 and step#3 together as shown below creating 4 corner units; press in direction of arrow.
  5. Join 2 corner units together as shown creating both halves of block; press in direction of arrow.
  6. Join units from step#5 together to create block as shown.
  7. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
