fence rail variation
Fence Rail Variation

This is one of the most versatile blocks. It can be made with two strips or 5 strips...just depends on the effect that you want to achieve. My favorite is to use three strips, but we're going to use four in this block.

In honor of the colors of the season, this block will be made with red and green, and offset with white, or WOW. We will be making this one 12" finished.

Sample Quilt Layouts

You need to cut as follows:

  1. White: cut 2 1-1/2"x42" strips
  2. Red + Green: cut 1 1-1/2" x42" strip of each color

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Join a white strip to the green strip and press seam toward green strip. Join the other white strip to the red strip and press seam toward red strip. Join the two new units together with the green and red strips being seamed and press seam either way. Once the unit is pressed check the width in various places to be sure that you have a consistant 4-1/2" width.
  2. Cut 9 4-1/2" squares from unit just created.
  3. Join 3 squares together as shown in Fig. 1, being careful to keep colors in the right place. Press seams toward center square. Make 2 units.
  4. Join last 3 squares together as shown in Fig. 2, again being careful to keep colors in the specified places. Press seams toward outer squares.
  5. Join the three new units together to form the block and press seam toward the outer units.
  6. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
