double x block
Double-X

This block was not one that I had ever looked at twice...until I saw it made up into a quilt on one of the soaps that I tape daily. The design intrigued me and I found myself rewinding the tape multiple times so that I could sketch it out and then I went to EQ3 and set it up (horizontal quilt layout). A simple block that makes up into a really nice "old-fashioned" looking quilt. So this is the one we will be doing this month. It is a "scrap" block...the light is a white or WOW...the colors are to be any medium/dark fabric. Please be sure you do not use anything too light or the contrast will be gone. We will be making this one 8" finished.

Sample Quilt Layouts

You need to cut as follows:

  1. White: cut 1 5" square; cut 2 3" squares; cut 4 2-1/2" squares
  2. Medium/Dark: cut 1 5" square; cut 2 3" squares

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of both the 5" white and 3" white squares.
  2. Match right sides of squares from step#1 to right sides of same size medium/dark squares; stitch 1/4" on either side of diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press seams toward medium/dark fabric.
  3. Square up larger half-square triangles to 4-1/2" and the smaller ones to 2-1/2".
  4. Sew a 2-1/2" white square to the medium/dark side of the small half-square triangles; press seams toward white.
  5. Sew a pair of units from step#4 together following block layout; press seams.
  6. Square up new unit to 4-1/2".
  7. Sew a unit from step#6 to the medium/dark side of the large half-square triangle; press seam toward large half-square triangle.
  8. Sew the units from step#7 together following block layout; press seam.
  9. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 8-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
