I looked at this block a couple of times...and tried to figure out how to make that middle section simple. I guess we'll see how I did. You will need only 2 fabrics: a dark and a medium of the same color. We will be making this one 8" finished.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Sewing Instructions:
- Mark diagonal on wrong side of Medium 5-1/2" squares, match right sides together with Dark squares of same color, stitch 1/4" on either side diagonal mark, cut apart on diagonal line...press toward Dark fabric.
- Mark diagonal on wrong side of 2 units from step#1 across seam, match right sides together with opposite colors matching, stitch 1/4" on either side of diagonal mark, cut apart on diagonal line...press toward either side. Square up units to 4-1/2".
- Mark diagonal on wrong side of 4 Medium 2-1/2" squares; matching right sides together, place one square on one corner as shown and stitch on diagonal mark; press open toward corner. Continue on other corners. Square up to 4-1/2"...then trim bottom 2 layers away on corners.
- Attach Medium 1-1/2" strip to Dark strip, pressing seam toward Dark Strip. Then, cut 4 4-1/2" units from new strip.
- Attach a 2-1/2" square of Medium to either side of 2 unit from step#4 as shown...press toward center.
- Attach a unit from step#4 to either side of unit from step#3 as shown...press toward outer units.
- Attach a unit from step#5 to unit from step#6 as shown to create block...press toward outer rows.
- IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 8-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.
