Card Trick
Card Trick Quilt Block

This is a block that is wonderful to look at, but takes a bit of care to make. It can be done with either two or four colored cards. We're going to be doing this with just two color cards to make it simpler. You will need 3 fabrics: a backgound and 2 colors you want to put together. We will be making this one 9" finished.

NOTE: This is a block where I strongly recommend that you starch your fabric before cutting as you will be working with bias edges.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Cut as follows:
Fabric Cutting Information
Background (Bkg) Cut 1 4" square
Cut 1 4-3/8" square
Both Fabrics
(F1, F2)
Cut 2 4" squares
Cut 1 4-3/8" square

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Mark the diagonal on the wrong side of the 4" squares of Bkg.
  2. Matching right sides of marked squares together with a 4" square of each color; stitch 1/4" on both sides of diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press open toward colors...square up to 3-1/2". You should have 2 HSTs of each color.
  3. Carefully cut the 4-3/8" squares of all 3 fabrics into quarters...diagonally.
  4. Creating 2 of each unit...carefully join F1 to F2, F1 to Bkg and F2 to Bkg...watch orientation of fabric carefully; press to either side being very careful not to stretch the seam...you should have half a square of 6 units.
  5. Join the 2 F1/F2 units from step#4 to create the center QST...press very carefully so as not to distort the block. Square up to 3-1/2".
  6. Carefully cut the last 4" squares in half...diagonally.
  7. Attach an F1/Bkg unit from step#4 to a half of F2...press toward F2...create 2 units. Square up to 3-1/2" making sure that the seam in the side with the quarters is lined up on diagonal.
  8. Attach an F2/Bkg unit from step#4 to a half of F1...press toward F1...create 2 units. Square up to 3-1/2" making sure that the seam in the side with the quarters is lined up on diagonal.
  9. Attach units from step#7 to opposite sides of QST from step#5...matching F2 to F2. Press toward QST.
  10. Creating 2 rows...attach an HST of each color to opposite sides of unit from step#8...matching F1 to F1 and F2 to F2...press toward HSTs.
  11. Attach a row from step#11 to row from Step#10...press toward outer rows.
  12. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 9-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.
