Bow Tie Block
Bow Tie Block

I am very late posting this block and I wanted to give you all an easy block to end the year as we will be doing some much more complex blocks starting in the year 2000, so I decided on this one. It is a very quick block, but can be put together in some fun layouts. We will be making this one 8" finished.

This one will be made "scrappy" and you will need only 2 fabrics for each block: a white, or WOW, for the background and a medium/dark for the bow.

Sample Quilt Layouts

You need to cut as follows:

  • WOW: cut 2 4-1/2" squares
  • Medium/Dark: cut 2 4-1/2" squares; cut 2 2-1/2" squares

    Sewing Instructions:

    1. Mark diagonal on the wrong side of the 2-1/2" squares; match to one corner of the WOW squares; sew on the diagonal and press open toward may trim the excess fabric, but leaving it will give more stability to your block.
    2. Attach unit from step#1 to 4-1/2" square of Medium/Dark; press seam toward Medium/Dark.
    3. Attach units from step#2 together to create block as shown.
    4. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 8-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
