bottle block
Perfume Bottle Block

I decided to go "whimsical" for this month's block. There had been a thread about "bottle" blocks on one of the email lists to which I belong...I had heard of vegetable and bug I decided to design my own bottle...but I like perfume better. This one is supposed to look like those round ones of yore that had the air puff on them. We will be making this one 10" finished.

You will need 3 fabrics to make this block: a bright print for the actual bottle...think geometric, bold dark floral or Japanese prints; a contrasting Medium/Dark for the stopper and an off-white, or offwhite-on-offwhite, for the Background.

  2. Attach the 3-1/2"x2-1/2" rectangles of Background fabric to either side of unit from step#1 to create a 2-1/2"x10-1/2" unit. Press seams toward Background fabric.
  3. Attach a 1-1/2"x4-1/2" rectangle of Background fabric to either side of the 1-1/2"x 2-1/2" rectangle of Print fabric. Press seams toward Background fabric.
  4. Join units from step#2 and step#3...with print next to Dark fabric. Press seam either way.
  5. Mark diagonal on wrong side of 3" squares of Background fabric; match right sides together with 3" squares of Print fabric; sew 1/4" seam on either side of diagonal marking; cut apart on diagonal marking; press seams toward Print fabric. IMPORTANT: these squares are slightly too large...square up to 2-1/2".
  6. Attach a half-square triangle to either side of a 2-1/2" square of Print fabric as shown in diagram; press seams toward center square. Make 2 rows.
  7. Join remaining 3 2-1/2" squares of Print fabric to create center row of bottle; press seams toward outer squares.
  8. Attach a row from step#6 to either side of row from step#7; press seams toward center row.
  9. Attach a 2-1/2"x6-1/2" rectangle of Background fabric to either side of unit from step#8; press seams toward Background fabric.
  10. Join units from step#4 and step#9; press seam toward unit from step#4.
  11. Attach 1-1/2"x10-1/2" rectangle of Background fabric to bottom of bottle; press seam toward Background fabric.
  12. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 10-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like.
