Air Castle Block
Air Castle Block

This one looks somewhat like Card Trick, but the center is different. Watch the orientation with the units on this one. You need 4 fabrics for this block: a light, a medium, a dark and your background. Your Light and Dark should be the same color. We will be making this one 12" finished.

General Reminders...(1) If there are any in the block, I have you cut slightly large for the Half-Squares Triangles (HST), so you MUST square them up as I direct, and (2) there is no sashing in the quilt to "fudge" block sizes, so you need to be exact with your finished block sizes in order to join them easily. In case you are wondering what colors I'm using in the blocks...the fabrics that I used are the same colors as my graphics. I hope this will be the start of a fun project for us all!

Sample Quilt Layouts

I know that Diagram 4 is missing right now. I will get it posted, but if you would like to go forward...just look at Diagram 5 and you can see the placement.

Step Sewing Directions
1 Mark a diagonal on the wrong side of all the 2-1/2" and 5" squares of Bkg.
2 Place a 2-1/2" square of Bkg on one corner of 4-1/2" square of Light...right sides together. Stitch just to the outside of the diagonal line. Repeat on opposite corner...press open to corners. Repeat on other 2 corners. Turning the unit face down, trim back to original 4-1/2" size. You may now trim the excess fabric from the corners, if you choose. (Diagram 1)
3 Using the 5" squares of Bkg and Medium, match right sides together...stitch 1/4" on both sides of the diagonal line...cut apart on diagonal line...press open toward Medium. Square up to 4-1/2". (Diagram 2)
4 Cut 5-1/2" squares of Bkg and Dark in quarters diagonally. I caution you to now handle these units very carefully as you will be sewing bias edges. Starching is a good suggestion if you tend to stretch your seams while sewing them.
5 Attach a quarter unit of Bkg to Dark as shown...be very careful of the orientation...they all need to be the same. Press toward Dark. (Diagram 3)
6 Cut 5" squares of Light in half diagonally and attach to units from step#5. Press toward Light. (Diagram 4)
7 Creating 2 rows...attach HSTs to opposite sides of units from step#6. Press toward center. (Diagram 5)
8 Attach last 2 units from step#6 to opposite sides of Snowball unit. Press away from center. (Diagram 6)
9 Attach rows from step#7 to opposite sides of row from step#8...press either way. (Diagram 7)
10 IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create the finished quilt.
