4-Patch Block
4-Patch Block

This is the most basic unit that I could think of...straight seams on the straight grain. We are going to be doing a set of 3 blocks to do this strip-pieced. You will need 2 fabrics: a light and a medium/dark...either prints or tone-on-tones. We will be making this one 6" finished.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Cut as follows:
Fabric Cutting Information
Light Cut 2 3-1/2"x11" strips
Medium/Dark Cut 2 3-1/2"x11" strips

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Attach Light strips to Medium/Dark strips with a scant 1/4" seam...press toward Medium/Dark fabric.
  2. Check width of new units...they should be 6-1/2" wide. Check width at varying points and redo seam if not correct width.
  3. Place units from step#1 face to face...butting seams really carefully...and having opposite colors together. Trim one end square, by setting a marking line on your ruler on the seam line and cutting end. Then cut 3 3-1/2" units.
  4. Stitch each unit together...to get center seams really tight...set unit with the "edge" of the upper seam allowance pointing toward the presser foot as this will slightly "push" the butted seams together when stitching. Press open with seam to either side.
  5. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 6-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.
